The Postmarks

I don’t want to start getting all sentimental and drooling over a singer, but The Postmarks' Tim Yehezkely is really something. Doreen had mentioned the band here, I had checked them out on the back of it, and the album arrived this morning and subtly blew me away, its general feeling of 40s romance dyed in modern indiepop colours making it such a sudden fascination. The album cover features Yehezkely looking thoughtfully into the distance, so classy and obviously reminiscent of Lauren Bacall in To Have and Have Not (every time I look at it I imagine a puff of smoke rising in the background), and the songs manage to capture that Have and Have Not-esque feeling of suspense, romance, defiance and heartbreak in every ebb. It also makes me think back to Au Revoir Simone’s oh so emotional and lyrical Bird of Youth record from last year, which is obviously a splendid thing, and if you draw a line between Bacall and Au Revoir Simone’s Erika Forster I’d imagine Yehezkely to be somewhere between, holding hands with Gainsbourg. The Postmarks are a sultry, quaint Pop delight.
