So Much More
Talk about Pop moments. It can happen in sport too. In fact sport has a great capacity for it. Spurs tonight were absolutely scintillating in beating Arsenal, and so aesthetically pleasing, in the finest Spurs’ footballing tradition. Tottenham have always been Pop I suppose, and looking back now, I see how they provided my very first experience of Pop, my very first obsession. It was Hoddle and Waddle, Ardiles and Gascoigne, never top of the league but always capable, and always I thought so much more worthy… It’s a bit like supporting Belle and Sebastian in a world of cover mag clamour, Spurs being a unique outsider club capable of something to be proud of, something so emotionally involving, and while other clubs - a little like “trad” musicians - blandly race for the prize, Spurs are capable of anything in the moment, and being a slave to the moment is just so Pop and so exciting. Tonight was fantastic, and what better way to celebrate than by digging out a bit of Hoddle and Waddle …
