Furry boots, bikini tops, short skirts, and Snowdonia Skies

Wyn Rimmer on the Isle Life Festival in Anglesey

Isle Life Festival
26th September, 2009, Mona Showground, Anglesey, North Wales

Saturday afternoon and as we head towards the North Wales coast blue sky starts to appear through grey clouds lifting our enthusiasm for the forthcoming event. Eleven hours of non-stop music spread over four arenas with 50 of the best British dance DJs on show.

In my bright yellow van with me is a very enthusiastic Dutch-born DJ by the name of Mitch, a veteran of this type of  event, the third member and completing the crew is Candice who is a dance fest virgin and first class babe, so I feel sure she will fit in fine tonight. The tickets are bought from a trendy clothes shop, the fellow after us has sold his on and wants two more but the shop only has one left after ours. We feel lucky and head for the Mona showground on the Isle of Anglesey that gives the event its name.

We arrive to find there is an extra charge of £5 to park in the showground. This is okay as the parking attendant is a friendly student from Sheffield who lives up to his name (Sheriff) and kept one eye on my van. Furry boots, bikini tops, short skirts and designer T-shirts start to fill the field. The boys in the car next to us have travelled up from London. I point out Snowdonia stretching across the eastern horizon. The journey was worth it for that alone.

I quickly acquire an upgrade. This comes at a price as once inside gangs of partygoers corner me to take photographs of them and ask “wot web site will it be on mate” but on the upside the stewards were friendly and gave me total freedom to roam on and around the stages. First port of call was the outdoor funfair to enjoy the sunset. The majority of early arrivals seemed to be out there and I quickly met up with friends Owen, Carlos and James.

The main arena is run by Fireitup with space for more than a couple of thousand people to dance the night away. Early on Sam Jones in a distinctive white beanie hat was impressive. Later John O’Callaghan, Giuseppe Ottavlanl Live, Marcus Schossow. Then at around 11.30pm more people flood in to hear Radio 1`s Judge Jules with deep bass trancient tones that brought a smile to many a face, followed by top attraction Eddie Halliwell`s wild effects and all too rare on the scene nowadays use of vinyl. He really is top draw and worked the decks while at the same time forming a bond with the crowd. An impressive stage set-up, ear shattering sound systems and stimulating light and laser show made the ticket price, £30, worth the money. My only criticism is, the visuals had no live footage of the DJs, and no VJs to sync the visuals to the music, but I would say that.... I’m a VJ myself.

Arena two - Goodgreef + Clinic. First I see Rascal wearing a cheeky smile followed by a very sassy DJ Amber D dancing as she mixes, and then clambering all over the decks. Like a man possessed was Mark EG bringing wild jerks from all present. The Tidy Boys doubled up with Kutski on their tail. Just after midnight I pop in to see Danny Killa keep the dance floor very much alive and kicking, I must say a big thanks to Danny and Ben from Goodgreef for my access all area tag.

The third arena is hosted by the vibealite crew. The sound of banging hardcore draws you in, the MCs modern erythematic poetry whips up frenzy among the heavyweight danceaholics till four in the morning.  M Zone and  MCs Gazzy J and Gav B get things started with some of the crowd bare chested in no time. Next I join Killa and Samora on stage with MCs Lex and Massey flanked by sexy stage dancers making the dance floor buzz with arms in the air and fingers pointing.

Between arenas two and three are side stalls selling and a bar with reasonably priced drinks and pleasant staff. Upstairs much later we find the fourth room with more DJs hosted by Skiddle with open windows overlooking the entrance and carpeted floor. It made for a rest bite to chill for a while and look down on the outside world. At 4am I head for the van and put the kettle on for a fresh coffee before the drive home. A young partygoer Zoë joins me from a car nearby for a sweet cuppa. “Wow this is well nice” she says. I think that about sums it up. In short Isle Life 2009 was well organised, well run and well nice for all who attended. I look forward to the next time the Isle comes to life.
